The power of a letter to inspire belief

Written by Catherine Turcios

24mm lens, 1/200 at f/4, ISO 200

*     *     *

What value could a single letter hold? I found out when I met Dassari (kneeling below). As I listened to her story, I began to connect a series of “coincidences” that were not coincidental at all. They were moments that God worked together to transform Dassari’s life.

Dassari received a letter from her World Vision sponsor, Angie, when she was 15. It arrived at a time when she was trying to face her fears and discover her passions. It’s not easy to be a teenager. It’s not always easy to live in a place like Honduras, a country impacted by disasters both natural and manmade. Getting to know the person who had believed in her for many years would be life-changing.

When Angie wrote that letter, she was a 21-year-old working as a teacher in an elementary school in the United States. In the letter, Angie described her work to Dassari. Even without a photo, the details in the letter helped Dassari imagine her sponsor in the classroom — and it kindled her imagination about her own future as well.

When I met Dassari, she was a 21-year-old schoolteacher, empowering girls by accompanying World Vision in different communities and sharing some of the training that she experienced through sponsorship.

Dassari told me she felt like she was living her sponsor’s life and making it her own. It was evident that someone had taught her to believe in herself. And for me, discovering these types of stories and witnessing moments like this — moments when you see how one person’s small action can change another’s life in a big way — makes me feel alive and inspired as well.

It all started with a letter. As children’s author Susan Lendroth says, “To write is human, to receive a letter: divine.” It’s divine what God can make possible through your interactions with others. Your words could make others believe in themselves.

In 2022, war in Ukraine made refugees of millions, disrupted crop exports, and sent food and fuel prices soaring in many parts of the world. This, combined with the lingering impacts of COVID-19, extreme weather conditions, and ongoing unrest in many countries, left millions of people globally on the verge of famine. Despite such dire circumstances, World Vision photographers witnessed many moments of joy and strength in communities where we work around the world. Here are 22 of our favorites.

Carefree joy in India

India is known for its diverse culture. For celebrations, women and girls dress up in colorful traditional attire, which is the most interesting element in all Indian events. I went to the community of Dhar and was lucky to meet 10-year-old sponsored child Varsha (left) and her friends Shivkanya, 11 (center), and Gareema, 11 (right), as they were practicing a cultural dance in their traditional costumes for a village function. I sat down to watch. Their smiles enhanced the beauty of their outfits, and their laughter highlighted their confidence.

Their innocent giggles showed how happy children are when they have their freedom. These girls attend school together, but Dhar is a community where many girls drop out of school to be married. The community did not realize the serious harm that child marriage does until World Vision started working here. In partnership with the government, World Vision is working hard through various community activities to help parents and leaders prevent child marriage and keep their girls and boys in school.

How great it will be when every child around the world wears this same smile and shares this same laughter. That reminded me of my responsibility in supporting this as a program manager. My contribution might be the size of a drop in the ocean, but every drop matters.

Reflecting with gratitude

Finally, as COVID-19 and conflict restrictions have eased in her community in Myanmar, 11-year-old Khaing (in pink, second from right) is able to attend a birthday party for sponsored children.

She joins other happy children scrambling on an old farming truck parked nearby, content after a delicious meal and fun games. They’re modeling their new World Vision hats. During COVID-19 restrictions children had to stay home, so this party is an especially joyful time for them, a time to heal. The virus has been devastating here. I lost my own mother to it.

My favorite verse is Matthew 19:14, where Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Whenever I photograph, the first thing that comes to mind is that I thank God I can work with children in these challenging times. No matter how difficult it may be around them, children are able to forget sadness and troubles for a while and remind us adults that we can create happiness and fun for them.

I look through my viewfinder and pray that God will allow me to capture the emotions I see, to create beautiful images of children. I pray with the children, too, before I photograph.

Parents love to see the photos of their children, to see their happy faces. They are especially proud that their children are involved in these programs. I also want to share fun pictures with our supporters, to show them we are doing our best.

In 2021, the world continued to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic along with wars and political unrest. Refugees and displaced people fled violence and persecution. Natural disasters left destruction in their wake. The world struggled with sorrow. But we have a loving God who walks with us through the valleys. He gives us many reasons for joy and celebration. World Vision’s communicators from around the world captured the sorrow, the heartache, the joy, the celebration, and the hope in this extraordinary year.

They capture those intimate moments that illuminate God’s grace and faithfulness as we follow Jesus’ example to show unconditional love to the poor and oppressed.

Discover what’s it like behind the scenes during some of these moments, published biannually in this year’s issues of World Vision magazine.

*     *     *

I was looking through photos from a trip to Mwala, Kenya, a rural community about two hours east of Nairobi, and this picture of Sofia and her grandson, Collins, gave me pause.

Collins is a busy boy — always on the go. But when Sofia’s well-worn Bible comes out, everything stops. Only the white curtains flutter in the breeze. Collins sits, listening with his whole being. Sofia reads, her face beaming.

The scene tugs at my memory. It feels familiar, and yet how?

Then it strikes me.

Every year during Advent, my parents would read to my brother and me. It was always the story of Mary and Joseph, their long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and their baby whose first bed was a manger.

I think my mom and dad — like so many parents — wanted to remind us of the season’s deeper meaning. Beyond presents, pretty lights, and Christmas trees. That story captivated us.

Looking back, this time also represented a moment when my whole family put aside life’s busyness and stress. My brother and I stopped playing, fidgeting, and fighting.

When the Bible appeared, peace prevailed.

Now, decades later, I witness that same peace in this Kenyan home. I feel the connection between Collins and Sofia.

And I give thanks to God for using this photo to transport me back to those long-ago Christmases and to feel the connection that binds us.

This Christmas, may the same peace be with you.

*     *     *

Behind a low wall of suitcases, two little eyes peer at me. We smile at each other and begin a language-transcending game of giggles and peek-a-boo. Her mom, Maria, tells me this 2-year-old’s name is Arleth. Cautiously leaving the safety of her mother’s mattress, Arleth leads me in a game of show and tell. She hugs a toy truck, shows me somebody’s shoes, climbs on a toy car, and scoots a short distance back and forth, sometimes pausing to stare. I bump up my camera’s ISO, captivated by the juxtaposition of this sweet face and her peculiar context — a community center turned shelter near the Mexico side of the U.S. border, where World Vision has provided relief supplies.

With 50 other people crammed in here, they awaited court dates and visas to enter the United States for more than a year, a process made harder because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I learn that two months earlier, a Mexican cartel brutally killed Arleth’s father and three other family members. Maria received death threats herself, so she, Arleth, and several family members fled their picturesque home, jobs, and harvest-ready crops in Guerrero, Mexico. They haven’t felt safe here either; it’s too close to the cartel. So, for now, Arleth plays inside. I’m grateful for a moment to join her.
